RockStar:60 #7 “Sounds of Silence”

It matters little how good you are at your vocation or avocation; if your communication skills suck, the rest of your overall impression and impact will suffer. Many talented musicians, artists, and entrepreneurs have remained in obscurity, or the greats have fizzled far too soon due to poor interpersonal communication skills.

Simon & Garfunkel’s ”Sound of Silence” is reported to have been written about man’s lack of communication with his fellow man. The song reportedly took a full 6 months to complete the lyrics.

“And in the naked light I saw. Ten thousand people maybe more. People talking without speaking. People hearing without listening.” ~ Simon & Garfunkel

Since everyone’s favorite subject is themself, one sound communication strategy is to consciously convey to others that you are at least as interested in them as they are in you. Otherwise, you risk leaving people feeling flat; or just flat put-off.

Effective communication skills are complex, multifaceted, and require ongoing attention to master. Applying the art and science of “communichology” is necessary, not negotiable. Nothing is more rememberable or reaction-inducing than one’s ability to commuicate well… or not.

Stay tuned-in…
